Clay to lawn

What happens to a bare plot, stage by stage

Swipe through. Every garden is different, but most Greater Manchester new-build plots need the same six things.

  1. Close-up of compacted orange clay subsoil with brick bits and a puddle that won't drain, typical of a handed-over plot
1The handover groundCompacted clay, brick ends and water that sits on top after rain.
  2. Landscaper seen from behind rotavating hard brown subsoil in a bare new-build garden between new timber fences

Why the turf has to be fresh

Turf is a living thing. Once it's cut, the clock starts, so it's delivered for the day it's laid rather than left stacked on a drive.

Laid onto loose, level topsoil and watered in properly, the roots start knitting into the ground within a couple of weeks.

The first few weeks

Keep it watered, especially in a dry or windy spell, and keep foot traffic light while it roots.

We'll tell you when to give it the first cut and how high to set the mower.

Questions people ask

What happens if it rains?

Light rain is fine for laying turf. If the ground is waterlogged, we'll move your date rather than lay on mud.

Do I need to be in?

Not if we can get to the garden. We'll agree access when you book.
